Additions to DEMO 2 - Checkpoint system
Something I recall hearing during the initial demos feedback was the lack of checkpoints. Plenty of people died to Tuffull and handful of times and weren't too happy to find themselves back at the title screen. I understand the frustration...BECAUSE IT WAS ALREADY ADDED!!
The funniest part about all of this was, we already created a checkpoint system for the full release of Mein's Quest. This was already created and working before the first demo was published. However, something was causing a hold up with the feature. I believe the example was trying to make sure you'd keep all collectables upon dying, At the same time, we also had the "R" restart button to quickly jump back and test other aspects of the level design. This made the checkpoint system trivial as devs. Eventually we did fix the issue with checkpoints causing players to lose their progress, but it seems like neither of us actually put the function back in...
So, we took it out. We did plan on implementing it back in, however, we forgot! We GOOFED
At that point, we had already published the first version of the demo on Itch. We didn't see much reason to implement it back in, as the first stage was so short and brief. The next demo will for sure have this feature reimplemented, since it was basically excluded as an oversight.
There will also be certain segments of the game with their own checkpoints. Certain stages that span multiple areas will have checkpoints scattered about. The checkpoints currently look like this, as its pretty simple and gets the point across
Anytime this icon appears at the start of a room, you will spawn at the start if you die. With stages proceeding to get longer, more challenging, and Mein only having the original 4 points of HP, it could get a little too tough. Meins Quest is aiming to be more approachable than most, so we didn't want players to get frustrated. Booting a player to the start of a room seemed like a good compromise...I'm sure most everyone knows of checkpoints and how they work...how did I make such a long post about it...guess it was still kinda fun to make art for this devlog...
